Green Schools Programme – Theme: Litter and Waste
We are delighted to announce that the school was successful in achieving our first green schools flag. The children in both rooms put in a lot of effort throughout the year to get the flag so a huge well done to everyone. Sixth class raised the flag. We had a small party with a delicious cake to celebrate.
Our school is working towards our first Green Flag. The theme of the first flag is Litter and Waste. We choose a Green Schools Committee each year and there is a representative from each class on the committee. The committee meet each fortnight and continue to monitor litter and waste in our school. Our Green Schools Notice Board is in the main hall.
As part of our current Action Plan for the Green Schools, we invited a facilitator from the Organic Centre to our school to do a workshop on composting. The composting workshop was facilitated by Ingrid on Friday 8th February.
Ingrid presented the children with lots of questions to find out exactly how different types of rubbish should be segregated. It was very interactive, which allowed the children to really think about how our rubbish should be separated.
The focus then switched to the compost bin and Ingrid really got the children thinking about what should we compost and what we can’t compost. Ingrid brought in a range of items which can be put into the compost bin, which helped to impress upon the children what should go into our compost bins.
Finally Ingrid placed two cards on a table, one of which stated, “Yes, can be put into a compost bin” and the other, which said, “No, cannot be put into a compost bin”. Ingrid then presented each child with a laminated picture of one item and they were asked to think about whether their item could be placed in the compost bin or not. The children were then invited to place their picture underneath the relevant statement. Lots of discussion and questions followed.
We thank the Organic Centre for linking with our school for our Green Schools project. We plan to link in with the Organic Centre to help us with our raised beds.
We have sent in our application for our first Green Schools flag and are eagerly awaiting to hear if we are successful in obtaining the flag. We hope to update everyone very soon.
