In order to be successful in the Active School Flag we must self-evaluate, plan, implement and monitor improvements in several areas such as the children’s physical activity throughout the day, our active travel efforts and our partnership with the local community.

One of the most important partnerships in the Active School Flag programs with the pupils of the school. It is really the pupils that run the initiative while being supported by their teachers. It is important that all pupils have an opinion on the initiatives and activities we carry out so an Active School committee is selected. It is the role of the committee to represent their class at meetings and bring forward new ideas. The committee members have completed great work so far; they have arranged an active line rota, yard rotas for both classrooms and organised a slogan for the school. We have 2 yard monitors (1 from each room) and at breaks they ensure everyone is being active and people are walking while they talk. The can also remind their teachers to take movement breaks throughout the day. We aim to have a committee meeting once a month and more regularly when needed. Take a look below at the photo of our Active School Committee who are known as our Active Agents. We will update pictures of our Playground leaders with their lovely blue hi-vis that we received recently, thank you Active Schools! and our 2 helpful yard monitors.

Active School Notice Board
We have dedicated a notice board in our school corridor to the Active School Flag. You can get information here on ways to keep active. You can also take a look at some photos of what we were up to.

Other Partnerships
We encourage our students to get involved in activities outside of school. Involvement in a local club is most likely to encourage lifelong participation in a sport or activity. In the school we include a range of physical activity to let the children get a taste for these activities which they can then pursue outside of school hours. This variety of activities allows each child to find something active that suits them and their personal interests! Are active agents will be carrying out some research to find out all the activities in the area soon and our notice board will be updated.

PEACE IV Programme
Our school has formed lots of partnerships with local schools. We are part of the PEACE IV programme which is a unique initiative of the European Union which has been designed to support peace and reconciliation. The aim of the programme is to build positive relations with with people from different communities and backgrounds. Our partner school is Mastersons National School, Manorhamilton. The children from both schools had great fun meeting each other. So far they have taken part in cricket practice which they all found very interesting and learned some Irish dancing skills.

Cumann na mBunscol
The school took part in the Cumman na mBunscol Liatrioma hurling initiative. All the children in the school had a chance to try hurling for the first time or develop their skills. The school would like to thank Darragh Cox who trained the children in both rooms and gave the teachers lots of tips and advice that they can use to help the children to continue to improve their skills. Hurling training takes place in Manorhamilton GAA pitch every Saturday for a variety of age groups. Here are just a few pictures of the boys and girls in action.

Ag Sugradh le Cheile
Ag Sugradh Le Chéile or ‘Playing Together’ is a programme which encourages active play between parents/carers and children. The programme was developed by the Health Service Executive and it is co-ordinated by the HSE. We would like to say a big thank you to all the family members who attended Friday the 8th of March. We had to bring the action indoors for the day due to weather conditions but lots of fun was had by all the children. Here are some pictures of everyone enjoying the games.

Leitrim GAA
We contacted Leitrim GAA to secure a coach for Active School Week and are delighted to tell you all that he will be returning every week until the end of term. The aim is to improve the standards and the development of up and coming players in the Leitrim area. Some children in the school have a keen interest in GAA but did not have the chance to go to training outside of school. We would like to thank Stephen, our coach for helping us out.
