Here in Ballaghameehan National School we strive to ensure the children get a chance to partake in all the curriculum areas outlined above. This along with our Active Schools Initiative keeps the children fit and healthy. In accordance with our Physical Education plan, all classes receive one hour timetabled PE every week. We promote the key messages of the Primary PE Curriculum in our lessons.Teachers utilise the PSSI/PDST lesson Plans to facilitate the delivery of a broad and balanced PE Curriculum for all age groups. The school has compiled PE folders for each class grouping consisting of PSSI/PDST lesson plans for the PE Strands.
This year the school decided to focus on a game that we would usually not have the equipment to play. We were very lucky to secure hurls, helmets and sliotars and had a 6 week block of Hurling Training. We contacted Cumann Na mBunscol and we were very grateful when they told us about their hurling initiative.
What is the Hurling Initiative?
In an attempt to boost hurling in the county, Cumann na mBunscol Liatroma have purchased over €10,000 worth of hurling equipment which will be circulated to interested schools free of charge along with easy-to-follow drills for a period of six weeks. This will give students in our school a chance to try hurling, develop their skills, and play blitzes – all without the expense of buying a helmet or hurl. Each child in the school is now being given the chance to try out hurling and the focus is on learning this new skill in a fun way. All the children in the school had a chance to try hurling for the first time or develop their skills. The school would like to thank Darragh Cox who trained the children in both rooms and gave the teachers lots of tips and advice so that they can continue to help the children improve their skills. We also found out Hurling training takes place in Manorhamilton GAA pitch every Saturday for a variety of age groups. Here are just a few pictures of the boys and girls in action.
